Introducing Shannon

Hello! My name is Shannon Burton and I recently joined the team at St Peter’s Bury as the Kids and Youth Team Leader. My role is to support the children and young people in Bury, both speaking about and showing the love that Jesus has for them.

We remember that when little children were being brought to Jesus, his followers tried to turn them away. But Jesus said “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19 verse 14) and he took the time to bless them. Jesus’ earliest followers, the disciples, were teenagers, and they carried on what he had started, after he died, was resurrected, and then ascended to the Father. We want to have that same heart that Jesus has, welcoming children and young people, blessing them and inviting them to follow Jesus.

As a church, we do this through:

  • Preschoolers and their parents/carers at Kingdom Play on Tuesdays at 9:30-11:30 during term-time

  • Kingdom Kids, during 11:30am worship on Sundays for ages 3-11

  • Messy Church, one Saturday of the month, from 10am-12midday

  • Our connected CofE primary schools, St Peter’s and St Luke’s

  • Chaplaincy work with year 7 at Bury Church of England High School. And hopefully more engagement and groups for young people in the near future!

A bit about me

I’m Canadian. My husband, Dave, is British. We met in Bangladesh, and married in the UK. We started our family in Cambodia, and, at the start of Covid, moved back to Canada to spend time with our Canadian family. We then moved to the UK, and settled in Blackrod. Our children are now 5 and 3.

I’m a qualified teacher with over 10 years of experience in a range of subjects and year groups, both primary and secondary. I am excited about this new role and the opportunities it presents to blend so many of the things I love!

PS: And, NO, pineapple does NOT belong on a pizza. Unless it is a fruit pizza.
